SEASON ONE—EPISODES
Stylistically, our show is a single camera dramedy, with a visual tone inspired by Fleabag, Lost in Translation, and Sex & The City.
Pilot | Heroes
New Year’s Eve weekend…
SIDNEY (SID) and her ex, JARED, spontaneously get married, despite them both being in love with other people. VICTORIA recovers from breaking up with her asexual boyfriend by ordering a male escort. NIKHIL is under pressure to decide which of the two brides he’ll choose for his arranged marriage, but is distracted by his growing feelings for HIMASA who is trying to ignore her growing feelings for him.
Episode 2 | January | Falling
12 months earlier…Sid expects a proposal but instead, Jared confesses that he’s finding himself attracted to men. At the radio station where she works, Sid clashes with BEN, 37, an egotistical Rolling Stone journalist from London interviewing a talented musician he admires named MADDOX, 32, for a feature piece. Nikhil has a humiliating Tinder hook-up and finally agrees to let his Indian mother arrange his marriage. Himasa’s immigration lawyer asks her out on a date, but she avoids answering because the idea of getting close to anyone makes her uncomfortable. Vic hooks up with an older man at a Quinceañera, then sneaks away to sing at a bar in the Spanish-speaking part of Boyle Heights where she runs into Sid’s dad.
Episode 3 | February | Changes
Sid takes Jared to his first gay bar to help him explore his attraction to men. Jared meets ANDERS, 27, a deaf man from Sweden; there is instant attraction. Sid helps Ben get a coveted interview with the reclusive former muse of Maddox, the Kanye-like performer who’s the subject of Ben’s Rolling Stone feature. In turn, Ben surprises Sid by getting her into a private concert with Maddox. Himasa supports Nikhil by accompanying him to meet the Indian matchmaker, SMITRI MUHUNDRA, 45. Himasa can see that Nikhil is attracted to the woman and warns him not to sleep with her. Vic and Sid’s dad meet up again and end up wandering through various karaoke bars, surprised by how much fun they have.
Episode 4 | March | Under Pressure
At the LACMA/KCRW Singles Night event, Sid discovers that Jared kissed a man and her reaction confuses her. Ben sees that she’s distraught and guides her away from the crowd to help her avoid a scene. Vic meets the perfect man for her, SAI, 45, and for the first time she doesn’t jump into bed without thinking. Nikhil’s matchmaker presents files on prospective bride matches, including her daughter, ASHA, 25. Himasa’s immigration lawyer charms her into going out with him, but she has to hide her father’s depression from him or risk deportation.
Episode 5 | April | All The Time
Jared is not ready to let go of Sid, but Sid realizes she can’t be the one to help him explore his sexuality. After ten years together, they finally break up and attempt to cut off all ties. Sid’s family and friends feel the loss. Sid and Ben have an electric night together and end up having sex. Vic continues to secretly see Sid’s dad (think Billy Murray & Scarlett Johannson’s late-night adventures in Lost in Translation) once a week. Himasa decides to introduce the lawyer to her friends but it doesn’t go well. In response, Nikhil begins a dalliance with his Indian matchmaker.
Episode 6 | May | Satisfacción
When Ben leaves for London and ghosts her, Sid agrees to date a hot Latinx musician. It’s the first time she’s dated anyone who isn’t Caucasian, a notion she psychoanalyzes for the first time in her life, realizing how strong and unconscious the urge is to assimilate when you grow up even half-Asian. Vic is ready to have sex with Sai but is shocked to learn he doesn’t want or need sex; he’s a committed asexual. Nikhil has amazing chemistry with the matchmaker’s daughter, ASHA. Himasa coaches her father on how to hide his depression as he prepares to meet the lawyer.
Episode 7 | June | Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson
Sid’s mom confesses that she suspects Sid’s dad is having an affair. Sid can tell Vic is hiding something and has not been supportive of Sid’s relationship crises. Nikhil tells the matchmaker that he’s considering her daughter, Asha, as a bride but the matchmaker—in a Mrs. Robinson move—demands he not see Asha because she doesn’t think he’s good enough for her daughter. Vic takes a deep dive into asexuality and tries to be in a non-sexual relationship with Sai. Himasa introduces her dad to the immigration lawyer but her father fails to hide his depression.
Episode 8 | July | What’s Love Got to Do with It?
Sid has been ignoring Ben’s calls but runs into him at a party. He’s back in LA with his ex, model Alexa Chung, celebrity du jour of the indie rock scene. Ben becomes agitated as Maddox shows an interest in Sid. Nikhil and the matchmaker meet up to discuss Asha but end up having sex. Asha catches them in the act, obviously set up to do so by her mother. Vic is tempted to cheat on Sai in order to sustain their asexual relationship. Jared confesses to Sid that he misses her and the life they had and they sleep together.
Episode 9 | August | I’m on Fire
Maddox asks Sid to join him on a dinner date with another couple who turn out to be Ben and Alexa. Vic and Sai have a fight after Victoria pressures him to have sex. Himasa confesses to Nikhil that she is a virgin and has never had an orgasm due to the trauma and enduring physical effects of female genital mutilation (FGM) at the age of 13 in Ghana. Nikhil tenderly brings her to orgasm through oral sex.
Episode 10 | September | Can’t Fight this Feeling
Sid and Ben can’t fight their attraction and end up sleeping together again. Vic misses Sai but is tempted to cross the line with Sid’s dad when he consoles her. Ben spots them in an intimate moment but Vic makes him promise not to tell Sid. Nikhil can’t stop thinking about Himasa but Himasa stops talking to him, Sid, and Vic.
Episode 11 | October | Heart of Glass
Sid follows Vic one night to see what she’s been doing on Saturday nights. In a Koreatown karaoke bar, she finds her dad singing a provocative song to Vic. Angry and hurt, she stops talking to Victoria and her dad. When she finds out Ben knew, she stops talking to him, as well. Sid’s friends and family are a mess, but they all come together for Sid when her grandfather dies.
Episode 12 | November | Magic in the Air
The friends attend the elaborate three-day, Indian-style wedding of Nikhil’s cousin, where they meet Nikhil’s two choices of brides. Sid makes up with Ben and Vic; Vic brings Sai; Himasa comes alone to tell Nikhil that she is getting help and she doesn’t want to lose his friendship. They all have an amazing night. On their way home, Ben gets a call that his ex, Alexa, is in the emergency room. Sid waits with him through the night. In the morning, they learn Alexa has aggressive breast cancer.
Episode 13 | December/January | How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Ben is torn between helping Alexa cope with her diagnosis and staying in LA for Sid, but when Sid doesn’t fight for him, he returns to London with Alexa. Vic experiences real intimacy with Sai. It scares her and she breaks up with him. Nikhil has two days to choose his bride. We pick up where the pilot started; the friends escape to Joshua Tree, but this time we see different scenes and points of view that we did not see in the pilot. After Sid and Jared marry, they admit they’re in love with Ben and Anders, respectively, and agree to take a risk and tell them. Vic helps them steal back their marriage certificate before the Justice of the Peace submits it to the state. As Sid, Vic, Himasa, and Nikhil drive back to LA, Nikhil calls his matchmaker and tells her he won’t be choosing either bride as he reaches for Himasa’s hand. Vic texts Sai that she wants to talk. A helicopter lands on the road blocking their path and Ben jumps out. He tells Sid he chooses her and they fly off into the night as New Year’s Eve fireworks fill the LA skyline.
